What is Good About Good Friday?

On the day that I am writing this, it is Good Friday. We may be so familiar with the day that we never think about that label.
Take a moment to think about the word “Good.” What are the images that come to mind? Family? Favourite foods? Enjoyable hobbies? Fun vacation spots?
Now take a moment and think about Jesus on the cross. Broken and beaten. Blood flowing from numerous wounds. Laboured breathing. Approaching death.
Now how do those two things fit together? If anything, we should call this Bad Friday!
And it is bad from one perspective. Jesus didn’t deserve to be executed. But it is also good from a different point of view.
John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
The death of Jesus was an act of love. Jesus’ life was not taken from him, it was given for us. The death of Jesus occurred because God loved us that much.
Whenever we feel unloved, we need to look back at the cross. Jesus loved us enough to die for us and that is a lot.
Good Friday may not have been good for Jesus, but it was very good for us. Let us hold that truth close to our hearts.
