Sometimes when we attend a worship service, we hear our favourite song sung and performed beautifully. We feel blessed. But what if that doesn’t happen and we feel as if we didn’t get anything out of worship?

There have been times that I have visited a church on my Sunday off and I either didn’t know the songs or didn’t appreciate how they led the worship service. I felt disappointed.

But why?

I have often heard Christians complain that they didn’t “enjoy” worship at a church. But that statement makes the assumption that worship is about us.

When I study worship in the early church, I see no references to what the worshippers received. The focus is always on God.

Worship was never meant to be about what we get. It is supposed to be about what we give. Worship is often described as a sacrifice and one of the things that we might have to sacrifice is our preferences.

It is not wrong to enjoy worship. But our joy should more be about our relationship with God than about the style that is used in worship.

We should be thinking, “I hope that God enjoyed that.”
