Why Are There Different Interpretations of the Bible?

If the Bible is inspired by God, why are there so many different interpretations of what it says? If the Bible is really from God, shouldn’t we all agree about its meaning?

Devout and intelligent Christians disagree about:

• Human origins and the age of the earth.
• What the end of the world will look like.
• When to do baptism and what it looks like.
• The role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.
• Women as pastors.
• The meaning of communion.

What do we do with all of these differences? What we have to remember is that while the Bible is inspired, our interpretations are not inspired or infallible.

We should not panic over this. This is how scientists have to work. When scientists do their work, they understand that the laws of the universe are objective. But they also understand that they are growing in their understanding of those laws. There are competing theories without calling into question the truth of science.

But why doesn’t God make things clearer for us so that we can all agree?

What we need to know is clear. Christians across the denominations agree on the basics. This is what C.S. Lewis called “mere Christianity.” These are things that we should focus on.

Perhaps the uncertainty of other parts of the Bible are there for a reason. How do we respond to brothers and sisters in Christ that we disagree with? Are our convictions so dear that we refuse to fellowship with those who have the “wrong” interpretation? Or do we take these as opportunities to show the world that our love for one another is greater than our disagreements.
