I never thought that I would have to write a post reflecting on how to respond to a global pandemic. But here we are.

As we read the news, we see different reactions to the coronavirus. Some are taking it lightly, seeing it as no big deal at all. Some are completely panicking, hoarding supplies and acting like it is the end of the world.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.

There are two things that I want to say about what is happening:

  1. Don’t judge each other’s responses. We have to act on our own convictions but we should respect other perspectives. The Apostle Paul speaks of these differences in his epistles. For Paul, what is important is not who is technically right, but how we show love and compassion to each other.
  2. Let’s use this time to shine as a church. There have been some Christians who have said some unhelpful things during this crisis. An event like this always brings the either the best or the worst out of people. Let us choose to act wisely and compassionately. Don’t get mad at store employees because they are out of toilet paper or hand sanitizer. Live out the Golden Rule of doing unto others as we would have them do unto us.

Think of this crisis as an exam for us as disciples of Jesus. Let us work hard to pass this test with flying colours.
