Last spring I had difficulty believing we were not gathering in our building for Easter Sunday. As we come to the end of this year, we will now also not gather for our Christmas Eve service.

Our church leadership decided Sunday to close our building to worship services and only offer online services.

Like the last time, we are not just reacting to government regulations. We could have had an in-person Christmas Eve service according to the rules but have decided to go online only.

The reason is love for each other and our community. I understand that many congregations and leaders see this as solely about liberty and freedom. We have chosen to focus on love and safety for those who are vulnerable.

How long will we be online only? The official lockdown at this point is only for 28 days. That may change. Even if it doesn’t change from the government’s perspective, we will reopen when we deem it to be safe. Availability of the vaccine may help inform this decision.

Until then, the church will continue to be the church. Christmas is not cancelled. We will still worship, pray and love one another.
