Baptist Beliefs: Missions and Evangelism

Baptists have always been about outreach. Traditionally Baptists have been strong in missions and many Baptists were prominent early promoters of the modern missionary movement.

How evangelism and missions are done over the centuries has changed, even though the message has remained the same.

We recognize that some overseas missionary efforts were sharing not just the gospel but also western culture and values. As a result, we seek to equip and assist Christians in their own countries rather than trying to impose a western version of Christianity.

Evangelism in our own communities has also changed. We no longer live in a nation that takes Christian values for granted. Living in a post-Christian world is only a threat to cultural Christianity and it opens up space for true obedience to the gospel.

Missions and evangelism is not about “shoving religion down people’s throats.” It must be done gently and respectfully. It is not our job to force people to believe. We share the Good News and then leave it to the person and God.

Missions and evangelism is not just about sharing the story of the cross. It also includes social justice and caring for people’s physical needs. Jesus both taught about the kingdom of God and demonstrated it by feeding the hungry. We are to do the same.
